How to Avoid Early Damage of Lead-acid Batteries

How to Avoid Early Damage of Lead-acid Batteries

For a long time, lead-acid batteries have been used in the power supply of both diesel and gasoline vehicles. When starting the engine, the battery is needed to power the motor in a few seconds. Battery failure or early damage will affect the normal operation of automotive electrical system.

For a long time, lead-acid batteries have been used in the power supply of both diesel and gasoline vehicles. When starting the engine, the battery is needed to power the motor in a few seconds. Battery failure or early damage will affect the normal operation of automotive electrical system. Therefore, we need to clarify the causes of early battery damage, and understand the matters that should be paid attention to when using. Batteries will not be able to charge and discharge properly soon after they are used. In fact, it is not all about the quality of batteries. If the battery is not properly used and maintained, it is most likely to cause early damage.

The main causes of early battery damage are as follows:
1. Battery is not fixed firmly, causing severe vibration during driving, cracking of sealing glue, rupture of battery shell and cover, fracture of pole and connecting plate, etc.
2. The installation of battery pole and chuck is too loose and too tight, which results in knocking chuck when disassembling and assembling, and too loose leads to poor contact and ablation pole.
3. Continuous use of starter for a long time makes the battery discharge sharply, resulting in plate bending and active substance falling off.
4. When the liquid level is too low, the exposed part of the plate contacts with the air and is strongly oxidized. The oxidized part of the plate contacts with the fluctuating electrolyte, and gradually forms a coarse-grained lead sulfate hardening layer, which results in the vulcanization of the plate. If the liquid level is too high, the electrolyte will splash out to corrode the parts when the vehicle is running.
5. The battery will be vulcanized and unable to recover if it is not charged enough for a long time.
6. Generator regulator failure, resulting in excessive charging, the active material on the plate quickly fall off.
7. When impure distilled water is added to the electrolyte or distilled water is added, metal containers are used. There are impurities in the electrolyte, which will produce partial self-discharge, and the phenomenon that the battery can not store electricity.
8. The battery is not charged in time after discharging in winter. The density of electrolyte is too low and it freezes, which makes the active substance fall off and shortens the service life of the battery.

In order to keep the battery in good condition and prolong its service life, it is necessary to carefully maintain and correctly grasp the use method. The following points should be done when using batteries:
1. When installing the battery, do not tilt it more than 40 degrees. Before installing, check whether the battery is sufficient; check whether there are tools left on the battery. Battery installation should be firm and the joint contacts well. If the connection chuck is not loosened, do not pull the connection chuck forcefully, in order to avoid the loosening of the pole pile affecting the output of electric energy.  When replacing other electrical components, the components should be disconnected from the battery.
2. The time to start the motor should not be too long. It is better not to exceed 5 seconds. The time interval between two start-ups is more than 30 seconds. If three successive start-ups are unsuccessful, the reasons should be found out and the start-up should be carried out after troubleshooting.
3. Always check the liquid level of electrolyte. The liquid level of electrolyte should be 10-15mm higher than the pole plate or between the upper and lower liquid level lines marked on the shell. The reduction of electrolyte level is mostly due to the evaporation consumption of water during battery operation, so distilled water should be injected when the electrolyte is insufficient. The addition of electrolyte with the same density as the original electrolyte is allowed only when it is known that the reduction of the liquid level is caused by the sputtering of the electrolyte.  Check the height of liquid level, avoid using all kinds of metal rods, in order to avoid self-discharge.
4. Supplementary charging should be carried out in time. The battery discharges 50% in summer and 25% in winter. The battery should be unloaded from the vehicle for supplementary charging. Check the generator regulator regularly to avoid overcharging or undercharging.
5. There should be no electrolyte on the surface of the battery, so it should be kept clean and dry. Exterior dirt can easily cause short circuit, loss of electric energy and damage batteries. The oxide between the pole pile and the wiring clamp can easily cause the current flow to be blocked and affect the starting of the motor and the power consumption of other equipment.
6. When used in winter, batteries should be kept warm or packed with cold-proof jackets; when used in summer, sunshine should be avoided.
7. Batteries from different manufacturers or batteries with different degrees of old and new should not be mixed in a group of batteries. Otherwise, the battery may be damaged. It is better not to charge the batteries in parallel, otherwise the service life of the batteries will be shortened.
8. If batteries need to be stored, they should be fully charged before being separated from charging equipment, and then stored in a cool, dry, ventilated and clean place. Long-term outage batteries should also be regularly charged and maintained. There is an internal self-discharge problem in the batteries. The daily self-discharge amount is about 2%. That is to say, if a fully charged battery is not used at all, after a long period of time, its storage power will be discharged by the internal self-discharge. However, the plate of the battery which is short of electricity will be vulcanized quickly, thus greatly weakening the storage capacity. Therefore, the long-term battery should be recharged once a month for about 10 hours each time. When batteries are rarely used, monthly recharging of batteries must be arranged to ensure that the batteries are fully and quasi-startup
